New Burma PM Opens Regional Conference - 2004-10-31

Burma's new prime minister, Lieutenant General Soe Win, has opened a regional conference on human trafficking in Rangoon.

General Soe Win, who became prime minister earlier this month, delivered a keynote address at Friday's meeting of ministers from six countries along the Mekong River -- Burma, China, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam.

Delegates are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding on improving regional cooperation in fighting human trafficking.

The Mekong region is plagued by poor border security, areas of dire poverty, and trafficking of women and laborers.
