Burmese Opposition Welcomes US Presidential Election - 2004-11-05

Burma's democratic opposition has welcomed the results of this week's U.S. presidential election.

National League for Democracy spokesman U Lwin said President Bush has long showed a commitment to bringing democracy to Burma, noting his mention of detained pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi in a recent United Nations speech.

U Lwin also praised the way the U.S. presidential election was held, saying Burma's military government should look to emulate the way both Mr. Bush and Democratic opponent John Kerry handled themselves following the vote.

U Lwin said Mr. Kerry's call for unity shows that U.S. lawmakers, regardless of party, can work together to deal with Burma and other issues.
