Burma Dismisses Currency Rumors - 2004-11-10

Burma's military government is dismissing rumors that it plans to declare its currency worthless.

Burmese state-run media report the country's finance minister told a group of Burmese bankers and businessman that Rangoon will not withdraw the country's currency paper notes.

The rumors suggested Burma may declare the currency worthless because of the widespread circulation of counterfeit notes.

Burma introduced new 1,000, 500 and 200 kyat notes last September.
