6 Dead, 1 Missing in Shipwreck Off Japan - 2004-11-14

Six crewmen are dead and one is missing after a shipwreck in northern Japan.

The South Korean cargo ship was anchored Saturday off the port of Otaro on Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost main island, when strong winds and high seas swept it into a breakwater. The impact split the hull of the 5,500-ton Marine Osaka in half.

A helicopter plucked all but one of the vessel's 16 crew members out of the water, but six were dead by the time they reached a hospital. The nine survivors all were injured.

Eight of the crewmen were Burmese, and the others were Japanese.
