Rights Group Says It Has Evidence of Genocide in Burma - 2004-12-16

A human rights organization is calling on the international community to investigate what it says is evidence of genocide in Burma.

The Britain-based Christian Solidarity Worldwide organization released a report Wednesday detailing findings from a recent mission to refugee camps on the border of Thailand and Burma.

The investigators said the ethnic Karen, Karenni, and Shan refugees reported undergoing forced relocation, forced labor, torture, rape, and being used as human minesweepers. The report said such systematic human rights violations amount to genocide under international conventions.

The group -- which partnered with the Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust for the investigation -- called on the European Union, the United Nations, and Burma's Asian neighbors to investigate the refugees' plight and pressure Burma for change.
