UN: 30,000 Burmese Need Tsunami Relief - 2005-01-05

The UN World Food Program says 30,000 tsunami victims in Burma need immediate aid.

A WFP spokesman said Tuesday food, clean water, shelter, and medicine are the biggest problems.

International aid agencies have been trying to visit the Burmese coast to assess the damage.

Burma's military government has been reluctant to provide relief agencies with firm information on damage and casualties and has not made direct appeals for help.

Burmese officials have reported 59 deaths and only a handful of missing. The U.N death toll for Burma stands at 90.

Secretary of State Colin Powell said Tuesday despite satellite photos showing relatively little damage in Burma, he is unsure whether to believe government claims of few casualties.
