Burma's NLD Open to Helping Draft Constitution - 2005-01-14

Burma's opposition National League for Democracy says it is willing to take part in a national conference and help draft a new constitution if the ruling military ends the house arrest of NLD leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

NLD spokesmen say the party wants to start from a "clean slate," but only if the Burmese military also allows the pro-democracy party to reopen its offices across the country. Burma's military junta has not responded to those demands.

Burma's ruling military says the conference will resume work on February 17th. The convention opened last May and ran for two months with about 1,000 delegates in attendance, most of them handpicked by the military junta.
