Asian stock markets closed mixed Monday with the key market in Tokyo rising on strong economic data.
Tokyo's Nikkei index rose a fraction of 1% (82 points), to close at 11,741.
Hong Kong's key index, the Hang Seng, rose slightly (38 points), to finish at 14,195.
Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Bangkok, Seoul, Kuala Lumpur, Sydney, Wellington and Bombay. Markets finished lower in Singapore, Jakarta and Shanghai.
Taipei markets were closed for a holiday (228 Memorial Day).
The U.S. dollar was quoted at 104.58 yen in Tokyo, down 1.71 yen from late Friday in Tokyo, and above its late Friday New York level of 105.17 yen.
The price of gold in Hong Kong rose three dollars and 70 cents to close at 436 dollars and 65 cents an ounce.
