17 Mar 05: Asian Stock Prices Close Mostly Lower


Asian stock Prices closed mostly lower Thursday, dragged down by the surge in global oil prices.

Tokyo's Nikkei index lost 98 points to finish at 11,776. The average gained 52 points on Wednesday.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index lost 15 points to end at 13,818. The Hang Seng rose 16 points on Wednesday.

In the region's other big market, Singapore, the Straits Times Index fell 10 points to close at 2,160.

Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Kuala Lumpur and Manila.

Markets were lower in Bangkok, Bombay, Jakarta, Seoul, Shanghai, Sydney, Taipei and Wellington.

In late afternoon Tokyo currency trading, the dollar was selling at 104.17 yen, down 0.11 yen from the same time Wednesday.

In Hong Kong, the price of gold rose one dollar, 40 cents to close at 443 dollars, 45 cents an ounce.
