Asian stock markets closed mostly lower Monday.
Tokyo's Nikkei index shed more than 1% (129 points) to close at 11,746. The Nikkei gained a fraction of 1 percent on Friday.
Hong Kong's key index, the Hang Seng, slipped slightly to finish at 13,660.
Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Kuala Lumpur. Stocks closed lower in Bombay, Jakarta, Manila, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, Sydney, Taipei and Wellington.
The U.S. dollar was quoted at 108.42 yen in Tokyo, down 0.23 yen from late Friday in Tokyo, but above its late Friday New York level of 108.30 yen.
The price of gold in Hong Kong rose two dollars and 90 cents to close at 428 dollars and 15 cents an ounce.
