The S&P futures contract is down less than a point. Tokyo's Nikkei index rose 242 points to finish at 11,077.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng index closed up 72 points at 13,699. The price of gold in London is $421.75 cents an ounce -- up $1.95 cents from late Wednesday.
The dollar in London is weaker against other major currencies.
