Asian stock markets closed mixed Monday, with the key market in Tokyo rising slightly.
Tokyo's Nikkei index rose a fraction of 1% (seven points), to close at 11,312. The Nikkei gained more than 1% Friday.
Hong Kong's key index, the Hang Seng, ended flat, finishing at 13,952.
Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Taipei, Wellington and Bombay. Markets closed lower in Seoul and Singapore.
Shanghai markets ended mixed, and markets in Manila and Sydney were closed for holidays.
The U.S. dollar was quoted at 108.57 yen in Tokyo, up 1.13 yen from late Friday in Tokyo, but below its late Friday New York level of 108.63 yen.
The price of gold in Hong Kong rose $2.80 to close at $426.80 an ounce.
