A female suicide bomber has blown herself up outside an Iraqi army recruiting center in northwestern Iraq, killing at least six would-be recruits and injuring more than 30 others.
Al-Qaida in Iraq claimed responsibility for today's-Wednesday's attack in Tal Afar, in an unverifiable statement on an Internet site frequently used by militants.
Tal Afar, near the Syrian border, was recently the focus of a joint Iraqi-American military operation to root out foreign fighters and other insurgents. The military said the offensive had been a success.
South of Tal Afar in Baquba, another suicide bomber slammed an explosives-packed car into a police checkpoint, killing one person and injuring 13 others.
Elsewhere, the U.S. military reports one American soldier was killed and another injured today/Wednesday in a roadside bomb blast in southern Iraq-near Safwan.
