Malaysian FM Says Burma's Move to Outlaw Opposition Group Impedes Democracy

Malaysian Foreign Minister Hamid Albar says any moves by Burma's government to outlaw the country's main opposition group jeopardizes hopes for democracy there.

Hamid said Thursday that Burma's continued detention of National League of Democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi is an obstacle to creating democracy.

He also reiterated that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations does not want to interfere in Burma's internal affairs.

But, Hamid said that ASEAN countries will continue to encourage fellow member nation Burma to listen to their views.

Last week, Burma's government said it had evidence that Aung San Suu Kyi's National League of Democracy has links with terrorist organizations and that is enough reason to ban the party an unlawful association. The opposition group has rejected the threat.
