A U.S. military helicopter has crashed while conducting combat operations in eastern Afghanistan, killing all 10 American soldiers on board.
A military spokeswoman Lieutenant Tamara Lawrence said the remains of the soldiers were found in the CH-47 Chinook helicopter, which went down late Friday near Asadabad, the capital of Kunar province. The crash site is about 240 kilometers east of the capital of Kabul, near the Pakistan border.
About 25-hundred U.S. and Afghan soldiers launched an offensive in Kunar last month, aimed at rooting out Taleban and al-Qaida militants.
Officials said the Chinook was conducting operations on a mountain top landing zone when the crash occurred. A statement said additional aircraft and crews were also at the landing zone and confirmed that enemy forces did not cause the helicopter
to go down.
An investigation is underway into the cause of the crash.
