A United Nations special adviser on Burma has met with officials in Thailand as part of an Asian tour focusing on issues that include Burma.
Ibrahim Gambari, who is UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon's special Burma adviser, held talks Wednesday with Thai Foreign Minister Nitya Pibulsonggram.
Gambari voiced hope that there would be progress in Burma on several issues, including the release of political prisoners.
When he appointed Gambari special adviser in May, Secretary-General Ban issued a statement saying he looks forward to the cooperation of Burma's government and other parties in making progress toward the restoration of democracy and the
protection of human rights.
