A United Nations envoy has called on the international community to drop its high expectations for change in Burma, and to instead recognize the incremental changes taking place in the country.
In a report to the UN Human Rights Commission, Brazilian envoy Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, says it is time to acknowledge the small changes taking place in Burma. He also urged other countries to engage, and not isolate, Rangoon.
Last month, the United States threatened to consider further sanctions against Burma if political and human rights reforms were not implemented.
The UN official added that as soon as the international community is ready to assist Burma in the process of change, the smoother the transition will be.
