Overview of U.S. State Department 2002 Report on Burma Human Rights - 2003-04-08

The report highlighted the repressive rule of SPDC (military government) denying basic rights to the Burmese people, imprisoning dissidents and harassing Aung San Suu Kyi during her political trip.

It also underscored some windows of improvement in the area of human rights by allowing United Nations human rights expert and the International Committee of Red Cross to do their work in Burma.

It also said ethnic armed groups reportedly also committed human rights abuses, although on a lesser scale. Rangoon later denied what it calls unfounded allegations in the report based on the fabrications of rebel groups like Karen National Union.
