More than 20 world leaders were among the thousands of mourners who attended a funeral mass for Austrian President Thomas Klestil in Vienna today (Saturday).
The presidents of Russia, Switzerland, Germany, and Italy were among the leaders at St. Stephen's Cathedral. Princess Anne represented Britain and Austrian-born Arnold Schwarzenegger, now Governor of California, represented the United States.
President Klestil died of multiple organ failure on Tuesday - two days before his term was to expire.
During his two terms in office, Mr. Klestil took an active role in helping the new European democracies integrate into the rest of Europe. He also publicly condemned Austria's role in the Nazi Holocaust against Jews.
Mr. Klestil's successor, Heinz Fischer, was sworn in as president Thursday.
