US: No Meaningful Dialogue in Burma

The U.S. State Department says Burma's national convention will not create a democratic constitution because opposition and ethnic minority parties are not included in the discussions.

In a statement released Thursday, the State Department said the national convention does not serve as a real forum for the meaningful dialogue that is needed to achieve genuine national reconciliation.

Burma's military junta adjourned the latest round of talks on Thursday until later this year, citing soaring temperatures and the approaching monsoon season.

The army, which has run the country since 1962, says the convention is key to a seven-stage "roadmap to democracy" laid out in 2003.

The United States, the European Union and the United Nations have denounced the proceedings, saying they are fatally flawed.
