UN Rights Panel Criticizes Burma, North Korea, Israel

The United Nations Human Rights Commission has condemned rights abuses in Burma and North Korea, as well as Israel's expansion of Jewish settlements in Palestinian territories.

The 53-country commission voted Thursday on a series of resolutions presented by various UN member states. It adopted a resolution condemning "systematic" violations of human rights in North Korea by 30 votes to nine.

The commission passed a separate resolution using similar wording to condemn violations in Burma -- by consensus and without a vote.

Also, the panel approved a resolution condemning Israel's settlement policy by 39 votes to two -- with the United States and Australia voting against the measure.

The commission also voted to renew the mandate of a special investigator into human rights abuses in Cuba. The vote on the U.S.-sponsored resolution was 21 in favor to 17 against.
