British Airways Suspends Flights From Heathrow Airport After Labor Dispute

  • VOA News

British Airways has suspended all flights from Heathrow airport in response to an escalating labor dispute at a catering firm that services its aircraft.

The airline Thursday canceled more than 100 departures and diverted at least 14 incoming flights to other airports, following a sympathy strike by about one thousand airline baggage handlers in support of workers at the catering firm, Gate Gourmet.

Earlier, hundreds of flights left the airport without meals on board.

Passengers had been issued food vouchers to be used at the airport before boarding their flights.

The trade union representing the catering workers says Gate Gourmet fired at least 500 employees Wednesday in a dispute over changes in work practices.
