Japan Pledges Aid to Burma

The Japanese government has announced its intention to donate 3.8 million dollars toward programs to improve the health of children in Burma.

The Japanese embassy in Rangoon said Wednesday it would give the money to UNICEF to be spent on immunization and the prevention and treatment of malaria, AIDS, tetanus and measles.

Japan is a major provider of humanitarian aid to Burma.

In August, the United Nations Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria cut funding to Burma because of travel restrictions on its workers.
