Iran, Russia Agree to Further Nuclear Talks

Senior officials from Iran and Russia have agreed to hold further talks on a Russian proposal to resolve Iran's nuclear stand-off with the West.

The two sides met Monday in Moscow about the plan, which is aimed at ensuring Iran cannot divert enriched uranium to an alleged weapons program.

Before that session, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov played down expectations.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki discussed the nuclear issue with European Union officials in Brussels Monday.

EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana says no progress was made in those talks. He says he hopes Iran will change its position before the March 6th meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

That meeting could result in Iran being ordered before the U.N. Security Council for possible punitive action over its nuclear program.

Western countries say Iran is secretly trying to develop nuclear weapons, a charge Iran denies.

Earlier this month, Iran restarted uranium enrichment, which could produce fuel for civilian nuclear reactors or material for weapons.
