Burma Convicts Four Local Officials of Forced Labor - 2005-02-03

A Burmese court has convicted four local officials of using forced labor on a road building project.

The International Labor Organization office in Rangoon says the officials were given prison sentences of up to 16 months.

Many Western nations and human rights groups have accused Burma of using forced labor for public works projects.

An ILO spokesman says this is the first time anybody has ever been found guilty of imposing forced labor in Burma.
