U.S. stocks were mixed at mid-day Thursday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average made a slight gain, while the S & P 500 and the NASDAQ fell two-tenths of a percent or more.
European share prices were lower at the close. London's Financial Times index fell 34 points to end at 4,962. The CAC-40 in Paris was down 28 points to finish at 4,038, and the DAX index in Frankfurt lost 38 points to hit 4,338.
Earlier in Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei index lost 102 points to finish at 11,865. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index lost 85 points to end at 13,856.
The price of gold is up nearly two dollars, trading at 442 dollars and 42 cents an ounce in New York.
The dollar gained value compared to the yen, but fell against the euro in New York trading.
