Asian stock markets closed mixed Friday.
Tokyo's Nikkei index rose a fraction of 1% (59 points), to close at 11,924. The index lost nearly 1% on Thursday.
Hong Kong's key index, the Hang Seng, ended slightly higher (35 points), to finish at 13,891.
Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Shanghai and Taipei. Markets ended lower in Bangkok, Singapore, Sydney, Wellington and Bombay.
Shares in Manila ended flat and markets in Jakarta were closed for a public holiday.
The U.S. dollar was quoted at 104.11 yen in Tokyo, up 0.23 yen from late Thursday in Tokyo, and above its late Thursday New York level of 104.04 yen.
The price of gold in Hong Kong fell one dollar and 40 cents to close at 440 dollars and 45 cents an ounce.
