Tokyo's Nikkei index was closed due to a national holiday. Trading will resume Monday.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng index was virtually unchanged, falling less than one full point 0.45 to end at 13,908.
In the region's other big market, Singapore, the Straits Times index fell more than nine points to close at 1,159.
Elsewhere, share prices were also lower in Jakarta, Seoul, Shanghai, Sydney and Taipei. They were higher in Kuala Lumpur, Manila, and Wellington.
In Hong Kong, the price of gold rose 80 cents an ounce to close at 433 dollars, 25 cents an ounce.
