U.S. stock market indexes posted strong gains Friday after Apple Computer announced a two-for-one stock split.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 46 points to close at 10,796.
The S & P 500 moved up eight points to end at 1,205 and the NASDAQ gained 24 points (more than 1%) to hit 2,077.
European share prices also closed higher. London's Financial Times index advanced 44 points to end at 5,044.
The CAC-40 in Paris moved up 46 points (1%) to finish at 4,017, and the DAX index in Frankfurt gained 46 points (1%) to hit 4,388.
The price of gold rose three dollars, trading at 420 dollars and 80 cents an ounce in New York. The dollar in New York is down against the yen but gained in value compared to the euro.
